JOURNAL ENTRY #2 Concept & Characters
 PROJECT VISION Camp Buddy began with a desire to make a visual novel that stands out from others as being fun-loving, simple and adventurous. Meny Yeoi/BL visual novels contain darker and edgier plotlines, and struggle to find @ belance between their plot and the R-i8 content within. We wanted to breek from that cycle and create an engaging and charming story that delves into the relatable themes of friendship and encountering your first love, while mixing in the sexual elements that naturally occur at the same time. Once we decided on the idea of @ lighthearted theme, we then needed a location that would force the characters to interact end engage in activities together, but et the same time give @ sense of adventure. An initial idea was to have the game take place in a school setting, since creating the main characters as students would allow them to attend classes together, wear @ uniform, end look up to those in @ hierarchy above them. It was also critical to us that the story has @ natural beginning and end, as school terms do, forcing the characters to create the best experience possible for themselves and develop strong bonds with someone over @ short period of time. However, in the end, the idea of a summer camp filled with outdoor activities end interacting with nature felt more unique end exciting, while still maintaining those critical elements a school setting would offer. ee Zain TT sae Title cretion is one of the most important phase in the beginning of eny project. While it is exciting to come up with a title, it is very challenging due to the need to capture the essence of a project in just @ few short words. We decided that our game would be best represented in one or two words, and began brainstorming from there. During the conceptual stage, a placeholder name for the game was chosen: Ikigal. Ikigal is a Japanese concept that means “reason for being,” and was an attempt to capture the memorable nature of the experiences the players and characters would share at camp. This idea was discarded, as our audience is mainly English-speaking, and we felt that the title was too serious and lacking in sexual appeal. Alter this, we were able to settle on the word “Camp”, as it fully captured the essence of summer camps and scout theme, and the term “Buddy”, as it is synonymous with a close friend, or even a discreet sexual partner. These two words were extremely importent, es we needed the title to be something catchy that stands out in the Yao! / BL industry, while also fully expressing the nature of the game. We also had the idea to try and spell “Camp” as “Kamp” to make it more unique, but ultimately this wes decided against as it felt unnecessery. With that, “Camp Buddy” was born! Just like the title, we wanted the game’s logo to ‘encompass all aspects of Camp Buddy and give the players a little taste of everything that's going to heppen in-game. The top of the logo contains the natural environment thet the player will explore, including trees, mountains and cabins. Meanwhile, the primary symbol of the camp, and are a recurring theme throughout much of the ert. They also help to give the logo a “dreamy” feel, which instil the idea that the game will be both memorable and magical. The color green was chosen for the word “Camp” as itis the primary color of the game's main character, Keitaro Nagame, and lets players know thet they will be experiencing the story through his eyes. Players might also notice that the “A” in Camp is shaped like @ tent, which is just another reminder of the ‘outdoorsy theme. “Buddy”, on the other hand, Is written in @ wooden texture, which captures the rustic nature of the setting end peirs well with the verious interfaces and settings of the game. Both words ere written in a playful font, emphasizing the lightheartedness of the story. Finally, the streamers at the bottom are represented in the colors of the rainbow, which also represent the five main love interests thet Keitaro can pursue!
PLOT THEMES Camp Buddy has multiple diverse end interesting plot ines, from @ consistent main story that focuses on Keitaro and the struggles he overcomes at camp, to five unique plotlines for each of the main pursuable romance options. With such @ variety, we were able to really capture many relatable stories and themes, allowing us to connect the characters to the players on an emotional level. The main plot creates en instent contrast to the almost-utopia like setting of the game by introducing a struggle in the background thet, if not hendled properly, could result in the end of camp for good. Keltaro must unite the campers towards the same goal, regardless of their differences, through his positive and resilent personality. We also wanted to add a sense of realism to the story, and show thet there ere some bed situations thet the player can't control, such es getting into trouble, unreasonable authority figures, and @ one-sided rivalry. However, each of these conflicts presents a chance for Keitaro end those around him to grow and show forgiveness and understending, giving the players e rewarding feeling when the conflict is finally resolved. ‘A constently repeated phrase by Keitaro is to meke “the greatest memories” during his stay at the camp. This idee is a flaw, as while he initially views it as a desire to make only positive memories, he learns throughout his stay that memories ‘are more then that, end should encompass both the good end the bad.  = COSTUMES suayoeseyg euleBeN ose110 Being the main playable character, Keitaro’s color scheme is directly inspired from the theme of the geme itself. He has average features of a typical protagonist. to give players a sense of familiarity and relatabilty. To compensate for his design, minor details are tweaked, such as the waviness on the tips of his heir, thick eyebrows, and beaming bright green eyes. He wears bracelets and bandages on his cheeks and knees as @ fashion statement, giving him a sense of quirkiness. The camp uniform is actually designed with Keitero in mind, while his other clothes are intentionally designed to be es casual and generic as possible. His overall design is aimed to be versatile and compatible with every romance option in the game. Knowing that more then helf of the game ert would inchde Kettero, we made sure we were comforteble with every part ‘of his design! To match his energetic personality, he was given yellowish-ember eyes end orange-dyed, short spiky heir. His most notable feature are his acorn hairpins which eventually play @ role in his story. His long-sleeved camp uniform is rolled up to his elbows while his scarf is worn on top of his shirt, giving him an interesting contrast. He also wears @ drink cenister and raccoon tail clasped onto his belt. His design didn’t chenge much from his initial sketch, except that he used to have forked eyebrows which were omitted because they took some of the attention away from his hairpins Hiro's personality is probably my favorite out of the cast. However, he desires to have a close group of friends, just like enybody else, but struggles to socialize due to his shyness. Even though he’s by himself most of the time, Hunter learned to enjoy relaxing hobbies such as reading and drawing, which allow him to develop his keen and observant senses. His sim end petite build is intended to make him very smooth-looking and appear somewhat frail, giving the player a desire to protect him, He is the only one wearing a fully long-sleeved uniform, while his shorts cut a little higher above the knees, which are balanced off with knee-high socks. Lastly, he was given a beret to balance the flyaway spkes of his hair and to give him an artsy look due to his background. Initelly, his design had @ short, shag heir end blue eyes matched with en eccentric personality who loved hunting and extraterrestrial topics. This was changed to give him @ less contradicting design and more relatable appeal.  ‘Animals, Pranks, Competition, Games, Sweets, Movies DISLIKES: Vegetables, Boring Activites, Rules, School, Beths PERSONALITY and BACKGROUND Yoichi is the wildest scout at Camp Buddy and heeds no authority but his own. His wild nature and love of pranks and nicknames often makes him appeer like a bully to others, and he is labeled as the delinquent of the camp. Yoichi also loves the outdoors, and hes @ strong competitive sense when it comes to physical activities and challenges. Because of his tough exterior, Yoichi has @ hard time conveying his feelings, and his good intentions ere often mistaken by others for him causing trouble. He also has a soft side for enimals, such es his dog, Yuki, who he treats as a family member. Yoichi longs to expand his family, and wishes for the day he can trust another person as much as he does Yuki
coves) | suajoesey9 BUNWPINA 1YIO, DESIGN CONCEPT Yoichi is meant to exude the strongest sex appeal among the main cast which is why we designed him with a more musculer body, contrasted with his purple color scheme and light skin tone. Yoich’s messy hair is shaped to look like he has wolf ears matching with his choker that completes his feral look. For him camp uniform, his sleeves are rolled all the way up to his shoulder to show off his arms. The wey his camp shirt is pertly unbuttoned and untucked gives off @ more unruly look. We intentionally displaced his camp scarf and badge to add to that as well. Since he shows off @ lot of skin, we balanced that by accessorizing him the most. He still insists on performing these additional tasks even at his own expense, due to an underlying reason.  Natsumi was designed to be @ “big-brother” figure, and it was only natural to give him a tall and slender build. We wanted his character to always present hmself as neat and well-dressed as possible, so we gave him well-styled dark blue hair and broad shoulders to reinforce that idea. He proudly wears a sash showcasing his, badge collection over his uniform and he also wears his wristwatch at all tmes for punctuality Natsumi was initially designed to be much shorter, with huge ears, big round eyes, thick eyebrows, and a messy hairstyle to display his dorky side but we then realized it contradicted with his personality of being @ perfectionist. For the sake of variety, Natsum's physique was changed completely — to a well-built and handsome senior who maintains his dorkiness as @ surprising treat for the players. He hes @ lean yet musculer build, with crimson eyes end matching red hair with yellow highlights in the shape of @ flame, fittng for his explosive personality. Taiga also has @ prominent scer on his face and forked eyebrows that add more uniqueness to his look. Teiga wes not meant to be @ pursuable character during the initial concept stages. Insteed, slong with Eduerd end Lee, their first designs were obnoxious end exaggerated. There were also supposed to be two other characters in Taiga’s group, but they were later deemed unnecessary and removed. Ths initial group was supposed to be from @ neighboring camp thet had a rivalry with Camp Buddy. Each character was meant to be an exact opposite of one of the five main cast. RIVES Per z @ = = G a & ° Gi Perna ial ior As the first route we wrote, Hiro's story took us the longest time to complete, as we were also making the main plotline alongside it and there were many shared scenes throughout the routes to be written. As inexperienced writers, we had many debates and discussions about how to properly execute Hiro's story as a whole. There were plenty of relatable themes within this route that allowed us to connect our own personal experiences. For example, the recurring theme of jealousy at the beginning of Hiro's route showed how it could be unreasonable sometimes, but understandable at other points. The feelings of frustration and misunderstanding during Hiro and Keitero's quarrel were definitely inspired from real experiences. Even the theme of a sick family member and Hiro keeping 2 secret from Keitaro were things derived from reality. From our initial idea of enclosing Hiro as a best friend who seeks courage to confess, his story has exponentially grown, allowing his character to develop in different aspects beyond our own expectations.

This introduced @ unique element thet allowed us to cover new ideas for him, such as insecurities caused by Hunter ‘comparing himself to others and experiencing affection for the first time. The first half of Hunter's story is @ cute ‘and simple love story, with Hunter occassionally doubting himself and his worth of being Keitero’s pertner. but is constantly reassured until he learns to be @ more assertive person and express his desires to Keltaro and others directly. Hunter's story also covers the idea of personal passion, and pursuing that passion regardless of the fear of failure or disapprovel. Hunter's talent end love for art is often seen by the world, including his parents, as nothing more than a hobby, instead of something that can be taken seriously as an actual career. As @ team of artists, we relate deeply to Hunter’s story and understand his fears and struggles with his family and society. We want to show that not only is it possible to pursue your dreams, but even to be supported by those you love in the process with ‘enough perseverance and understanding. We took Hunter's route as @ chance to shake up the order of events that took place in Hiro’s route in order to make sure his story had a pace that matched the progressive character development we had planned. We were also extra careful to maintain the original vision for him @s @ character thet the player finds precious and wants to protect, but also added @ contrast by giving him moments where his determination would shine through, making his story satisfying and fulfing. Hunter’s journey feels larger, especially when looking at where he started as @ person and how fer he came to be the best version of himself at the enc P @ ath ht a~
